Davie County Update

Lots of things are happening in Davie County.  Chick-fil-A is coming to Bermuda Run, maybe by May 1.  Highway 55 in Mocksville looks like it is very close to opening.  Cookout has purchased the old Sagebrush property.  There is still no word on when they will break ground.  A new carwash is finally starting to take shape near Walmart and a lubrication business is building near Sheets. The Department of Transportation is working on projects to help the traffic issues at the intersection of Hwy 801 and US 158.  A short-term solution would be to add a lane to 801 Northbound.  The long-term solution is the new Baltimore Rd interchange that is coming in 2026.  The route will not come across US 158 at the present intersection with Baltimore but will be slightly east on 158.  A stoplight will be...

Teachers

I hear a lot of people talking about how easy teachers have it by having the summer off.  But there are a few things that they don’t know. The teachers get paid for 9 months, not 12, but they can spread the payments out over a 12 month period. Don’t assume that they don’t work during those summer months that they are not being paid for, because they are.  They will be meeting with other teachers on their grade level to plan out what they will be doing the next year.  They will be planning the way their classroom will be set up.  They will go back into the school before classes begin to set up their room, putting up bulletin boards, placing the furniture and decorating with their theme for that year.  Some money is given to them to help offset the cost but they still spend a lot of their...

Interest Rates

I hear a lot of people complaining today about the interest rates being so high.  Interest rates were at a record low prior to the recent increases.  In 1981 when I first got my real estate license, interest rates were at 18 percent.  Real estate agents had to be creative to make a deal work.  Owner financing was one of the options. Sometimes banks would allow the current mortgage to be assumed and, of course, there are always cash buyers.  Current rates for buyers with good credit are in the 5 percent range and a buyer can always refinance if the rates drop.  Adjustable rate mortgages are a good option.  They usually have a lower rate and generally cannot adjust for 5 years, which means that the rate will stay the same for 5 years. If you are ready to make a change, don’t wait.  Get...

Downtown Mocksville's Annual Bed Race

Mocksville has so many unique features and events. Those of us born and raised here have seen these events transform and grow over the years. From the Boone Festival to the downtown car shows to name a few. Mocksvillians are always willing to come out and have a good time. With that in mind, this Friday night is the annual bed race. This is where a team races a bed with a person riding in the bed on the streets of downtown Mocksville. Your roving reporter has been keeping an eye on one such team that in the past has been known to push the boundaries of bed racing. It is rumored rules had to be put in place because of a past performance by this team of innovative bedracers. I am of course an impartial reporter and only reporting to share a little insight on what to expect this Friday...

The 2022 Election, Don't Blink

November 12, 2022| The election was as of the writing of this story four days ago. Exit polls showed over seventy percent of voters cited the economy as their main concern. So apparently we are to believe they voted democrat, maybe more poison is the best solution? I am not going to write this article on the election but instead on the ballot counting. Although I find it fascinating that I can gaze up at my TV screen and see states over eighty percent of the counties are red and yet they seem to in the end turn blue. The pandemic's advent of mail in ballots has been quite a benefit to the left wouldn't you say? What I wanted to discuss as I take you down memory lane. I remember my dad bought a long cord for my mom's kitchen phone, so she could travel around the kitchen while talking on the...

Can The Republican Party Finally Get It Right?

Here we are again poised for the Republicans to take back the House and the Senate. I wanted to remind everyone including our Politicians how they did the last time 2016-2018. Remember how tired we all were we finally came to the end of the Obama saga? The Republicans finally got their wish, Control of all three branches of Government. What did the Republicans do? Well, they went along with the absurd Russia meddling hoax. Our very own soon-to-be-retired and good riddance Richard Burr was one of the turncoat leaders. Have you ever noticed the democrats are willing to die on every hill, they stick together like glue, but the republican party has to have sellouts like Richard Burr and walls don't work Thom Tillis, Liz Cheney, and Mitt Romney just to name a few. How about what they did for...
